Sant'Angelo

Castel Sant'Angelo, or Hadrian's mausoleum, is seen here at the end of the "Bridge of Angels", or Ponte Sant'Angelo. The latter is lined, above each pier, with statues of angels. Castel Sant'Angelo was used as a fortress for the Popes in times of peril, and also housed, at one time, the treasures which they had gathered.
Castel Sant'Angelo at night. Even more spectacular than during the day.
From Rome, we journeyed by train down to Sorrento, a picturesque town on the Mediterranean, approximately 2 hours travel time from Rome. We had to transfer in Naples to a commuter line, which was a challenge with all our luggage. From the cliffs near the Sorrento city centre, one can look down on each of two harbours.
This is Sorrento at dusk. This is one of many narrow streets lined with souvenir shops, fruit markets, restaurants, and shops selling the beautiful locally-fabricated inlaid wood articles for which this region is famous.
My wife and I travelled from Sorrento by jet boat to the beautiful island of Capri. We then took the cable car up to the top of the island and hiked down the other side to another harbour. The view from the top was magnificent, as it was a clear sunny day.
